I would certainly ask for an extended warranty on the repairs. They are still taking the easy way out. The slide is not that difficult to remove and is done all of the time at decent repair facilities.
As far as no room to work....Suppose they just cut an area in the side of the upper frame. Just enough to insert a new bolt. After the new bolt is installed, with a nut to hold it in position instead of a weld. Then all they have to do is weld a cover plate for the hole they made. Since the weld would be in the plate, and not the bolt, it should be as strong as the original.
