I'll will use a stainless or a galvanized screw to go back in. And yes on the coarse thread. And there's no easy way to add any other type of backing other than in that one short area behind the TV. You can't access the underside of the roof on the sides without removing the ceiling and to do that would require a whole lot of tear down.
After getting it all off the gap in that one area disappeared. I think what happened originally is the minimum wage worker that put the screws in put the end screws in first on either side. Then he started over on the passenger side and put all the other screws in one at a time all the way over to the drivers side. What this did was forced the little bit of extra play all into that one spot. I think as he was putting the screws in he had his driver set to too high a torque and was just stripping what ever wood they would grip into. So the end result is the play in the front cap in that one area just popped the screws out of the wood immediately and instead of going back and doing it right they just filled the gap with caulk.
I do really like my motorhome and it has not given me huge amount of problems, but the problems it did give me when I've gone to fix them, it is obvious they were just from faulty craftsmanship. In this case the system they had here would have probably worked just fine, but the dummy running the drill driver just screwed it up.
