Gas Gauge not working

I went and filled up yesterday and when I was driving away I noticed the gas gauge said 1/4 full. Thats where it was when I pulled in. I even went back to make sure I didn't pour 50 gallons of gas on the ground.
This is an 06 Daybreak on a F53 chassis.
One thing I did recently is replaced a hydraulic hose that went from back jack to back jack. This hose went over the gas tank. I wonder if I may have bumped the sensor connection.
Everything else on the dash is working.
Your thoughts
Thanks
  • Had a problem like that 15 years ago except it was on empty. The RV dealer ran the gas down too low and the combination fuel sender and gas pump burned out. Research indicated that that was a common problem if the gas level got too low. It seems that the gas flowing through the unit also cools it. Poor design if you ask me. Had to replace the unit. Involved removing the leveling jacks cross beam, emptying and lowering the gas tank. The cost about $1,100 to $1,200 dollars. The idiots did not replace the rubber gas line connecting the unit to the metal gas line for the generator. About 3 to 4 inches of rubber gas hose. 2 years latter the rubber gas hose cracked and I had to redo the entire process to replace the hose. Luckily the second job was done by some friends so it just cost me a couple of six packs. My recollection is the tech said it could only be a bag gauge on the dash or sending unit in the gas tank. Hope it works out ok.
  • Check your chassis fuses too. You may have bumped the sensor wire and caused a short that blew the fuse to your gauges. Easy to do....

If you "bumped it" it would read empty or full. Probably empty.
  • My sensor was part of the pump assembly. When I had to replace the pump, it fixed my gas gauge problem.

A good rule of troubleshooting is to always go back to the last place you were.

I just did this and found the sensor right on top. After 10 years its pretty well set in. Looks like it may pop out but I couldnt get it to break lose or hardley even wiggle.
I think you're right as it is right where I replaced the hose.

In my case I was pouring it on the ground! The vents in the tank had fallen out of position. This has happened twice to me.

This was my first thought. When I went back to check, there wasn't a drop. 50 gallons would have shown. Thanks

did you shut the engine off when filling? my wife's car does not update the fuel level until the key is put in off position and then turned back on

Yes. It was off. I have started it several times and still the same.
