The generator does have its own fuel pump and pickup. It would be strong enough to suck fuel from that tank unless:
1) Fuel tank is below the genny pickup (usually 1/4 tank or so)
2) Rubber fuel line deteriorated and sucking air (most likely)
3) Generator feed line clogged with gunk from the tank
