....I’ve seen some people state that they have avoided a diesel .... why so ?

Most diesels are too big (length and height) for our needs, initial cost of a diesel is too high, diesel maintenance costs are ridiculous, I don’t need the extra towing capacity of diesels.
The cost of the small Sprinter diesels blow my mind compared to the gas equivalent.
