Generator fuel consumption

I run the generator while traveling for a few reasons: 1) keeps it working, 2) continuous charge of batteries, 3) residential refrig is on, 4) DW uses sewing machine which requires 120v, and sometimes 5) roof A/C is on.

Is there a way to determine how much gas the generator uses while traveling down the road?

Thanks for your responses.

Our manual shows fuel consumption based on load, but average was .5 gallons per hour
  • We were at a July 4 celebration in the plains of Kansas and it was hot. We ran a 7K diesel 24/7 for a few days to keep the dogs cool with the dual AC running on a thermostat. Best I can judge we were using about a gal./hr.
  • The Onan RV QC 5500 Generator is rated to use 0.3 g/hr with no load, 0.6 g/hr with half load and 0.9 g/hr with full load.

  • Go to the generators manufacturer's website. It will list hourly burn rates at various loads.
  • We have a 20K generator and under full load I think it burns about 1 gal. per hour at the most. It is really hard to calculate as there are so many factors. The general consensus has always been stated a 0.5-1.0 gallons per hour depending on load.

If your generator is a gasoline model, it will burn more than a diesel generator.

    MM.
  • Fill the tank. Travel for a number of hours. Refill the tank. Count gallons, divide by number of hours that you traveled.

    My guess is .6-.9 gallon/hr.
