Generator hours

After almost ten years of usage I have 2230 hours on my generator, this includes running 7 straight days after a hurricane until power was restored. I change oil and filters every 150 hours as well the air and fuel filters when required. Question does anyone else have this many hours or more in a 10 year period or do I have a record here.

  • Well I have 1290 hours 310 in the last 2 years ive owned the present coach. I've heard stories of those with many more hours as discussed here but I'm curious of those who have all those hours have you done that 1000 hour service every 1000 hours .. I'd bet not in most cases. Am I wrong?

I have read and Onan says that you need to have the valves adjusted at 1000 hours. Is this really needed for those of you that are over that amount? It requires pulling the Gen out and off the slide to access.

That's expensive for a valve adjustment. On the other hand, given that wear is likely to reduce clearances, which if not accounted for by periodic adjustments, will lead inevitably to valves not closing, and thus getting burned as hot gases escape the combustion process, necessitating a much more expensive full valve job, I think I'd be inclined to spring for the adjustment, or better yet, learn how to do it on my own.
  • I doubt that's a record.

2230 hours would be 111,500 miles at 50 miles an hour average speed for a vehicle engine. Used, but hardly used up.
  • Our Onan diesel has 3,459 hours and still running like a top.

  • I know that this is not answering your '10 yr. old' question.

A fella that I know has a early 90's Prevost Liberty coach with almost 8,000 hrs. on his generator and it purrs like a kitten.

They like to run. It is said that they can run 30,000 hrs. before major attention is needed.

    Safe travels,
