Generator Surging

Question

While driving down I95 south yesterday I started my generator and turned on both A/C units everything ran fine for 15 minutes then the Wife noticed the A/C unit was surging we turned off one unit and  then there were no problems what could be the possible cause and some common things I should look at any advice is welcomed

Dirty fuel filter, dirty air filter, water in the carburetor. Bruce

A new fuel filter stopped the surging on our 96 Southwind, Onan 5500 genterato.

Thanks for the replies those all sound like logical maintainance issues I will be checking all those issues and changing out as necessary  :)
