Generator while traveling

I have seen much discussion about RVers who run their generators and overhead A/C while traveling down the road.

Since my generator is running and could use a workout can I do my laundry also? I can carry more fresh water than I need and I can dump everything in the next dump station at the next campground.

Your thoughts?

ps Thanks

My concern, if your machine is a top loader, is sloshing of water over the top of the tub. If it's a front loader, Delete that. Good time to do the bedding, after all, you can not sleep in it while driving.

Yes, we have several times with a 2100XC although we rarely have to run the generator for AC. If it can take the out of balance vibrations from the high speed spin, a few bumps in the road ain't going to hurt it.
  • When we first got our MH (used)I asked Fleetwood about running the wash machine while going down the road and they said that was fine, but I couldn't run the dryer without starting the generator. From that I deduced that the washer didn't draw a lot of power but the dryer did.

So yes you can run the washer with the generator but it probably won't put much of load on it so run the dryer also for a real load on the generator.

We normally don't use the dryer. Instead when we're parked with both slides out we use a clothes drying rack.

  • Can you? Sure.

Should you? Depends on your machine.

Our washer creates quite a bit of vibration during the spin cycle. (We joke that it's sort of like an amusement park ride.) No way I'd want the additional vibration wiggling around the coach when I'm running down the road.
  • I see no reason why not. They do laundry on boats/ships. It might be a problem going over the mountains on a long 6% grade as it might affect the drainage, but why not.

I think it is not recommended due to vibration that may damage the drum going down the road.

Considering the vibrations the machine produces all on its own (shakes the whole coach), I never worried much about that part. Been using the washing machines while traveling in all my coaches without ever an issue. It may not be officially recommended, but my coach never bounces near as bad as the machine itself.

It sure is a big help when traveling more across country without daylong stops.

  • If it gets too hot inside my RV I run the overhead AC units.
  • We travel with our generator running and AC ON all the time. Dash A/C blows cold but not enough to cool the coach when it is hot outside.
As far as running the washing machine while traveling ... that I have not tried. Can't see why it would be a problem though.
