So the real question is why it did not work for OP, while it works fine for others.
Running generator once a month under a load when you have the coach in storage that you don't open for 6 or more months is a big hassle.
For me generator is a backup, not necesity for my camping, so I don't really care if it fails at some point, but that is beyond the point.
We do have enough feedback to prove that if you run the engine carburetor dry and don't have gasoline older than 2-3 years you don't have to worry about restarting that thing for few years.
If you want to talk about things advisable to maintain, I can provide you with a list of milion things that you don't do in your life not even knowing.
How about replacing flexible hoses under your sinks every 2-3 years?
When was the last time you flashed your water heater?
How about some lube on door hinges and replacing weather strip?
Just tell me when to stop?
