Generator

Is it possible for a generator to self-start? Motorhome was in driveway, plugged in to 50 amp. service, nothing running but refrigerator. Awoke to discover generator running. Thoughts please?
  • Check your 50 Amp service, tripped breaker? Or maybe a problem with the surge protector. Were theree any storms in your area last night that could have caused the unit to start for loss of power, and then it did not shut down when power was returned.
  • It's also possible for a short to ground in the remote start control wiring to cause an unintended start.
  • Whitetail,

Yes, generators can be set to 'auto-start'. I can set ours to immediately start if shore power is lost or I can set it to come on if the batteries reach a certain level.

Is your generator set to come on with the auto-start feature? If not, you might have a problem with your transfer switch (guessing).

You didn't mention what type of generator you have (brand?).

    Safe travels,
    MM.
  • Many RV's have an auto start on the generator at a preselected battery voltage. A bit more info is necessary.
