Is the red light next to the switch or part of it. Can you explain what you mean when you say it works on battery power. Does something actually turn on when on battery power, but it does not turn on when plugged in?
Campers of that vintage probably won't have a built in inverter. What you're finding under the hood might be a battery isolator to allow the alternator to charge the house battery.
It's a part of the switch. So the lights will work on battery power. But the lights wont work on shore power or generator power. It appears it was a battery isolator, I just saw one at a local RV store that looked just like it.
