Use both in moderation and reduce speed overall.
When using the brakes slow 15 to 25 mph with moderately firm braking. Then let it coast back up to speed. This allows all brakes to absorb heat in proportion. Riding the brakes to maintain steady speed will tend to overheat the front axle.
Gas engine should be 3000 to 4000 rpm to effectively assist in braking.
Slower speed allows for more time to cool the brakes.
If the road is winding use the brakes to slow before the curve. The hard part is to resist touching the throttle as the road straightens out. Again let it coast back up to speed.
