The campground we are currently in has been over run by golf cars. They started coming in yesterday. Triple tows, trucks w/ trailers following motorhomes, motorhomes towing....pretty much everything. They unloaded and have been like flies all day. So I sit here tonight pondering what might provoke this activity. There is no rally or anything and most don't appear to know each other. But all they do all day long is drive up and down the roads, back and forth, up and back. Makes no sense to me. This is not a troll post. Debi and I were trying to figure it out. Some of these carts are cleaner and in better shape than the RVs that are pulling them. Many seem to be locals too. We have not seen this activity on the West Coast only the East. So my question is: What's the deal? Is this activity similar to the "cruise days" of long ago? We are talking adults here, not kids. Is there a logical reason to take a golf car to a campground? Most of the people driving them look like they should be walking or at least exercising of some sorts. I understand if you're in a huge campground where you have to go a mile to the store or pool, but this is a smaller campground with paved roads and wide spaces. The pool/activity center is maybe two short blocks away...anyone have a clue?Thanks for helping me understand....I'm not sure I want or need to get myself one yet....Dennis

Living on the east coast, I also have witnessed this phenomenom. Some of them are jacked up, big tires, chrome wheels and gas engines. We saw one that was fashioned like a 57 Chevy. I don't own one and can't seem to wrap my mind around the purpose. I will tell you though, if you visit Disney's Ft Wilderness campground and plan to walk, wear an orange vest and grow eyes in the back of your head or you will surely be run down.

When staying at a few east coast campgrounds I noticed a lot of golf carts as well. Personally, I like to walk to various destinations within a campground as I need the exercise. If these people have the bucks to rent or buy a golf cart to cruise the campground I don't have a problem with it. It's just not my thing, though.

Some may live on a 1/2 acre lot and have no place to ride their quad, and quads aren't allowed at the campground. They need to ride something somewhere.

I have to ask Dennis, what campground are/were you at when you saw all the golf carts?

Most of the campgrounds we go to in South Louisiana have lots of golf carts. It's not a status symbol, and no one seems to be annoyed with them. It's a fun way to get to meet new people and spark up a conversation. Every CG I've been to has enforced speed limits and age restrictions on golf carts, and I've never heard of anyone being run down by one. Now I know some of you grumpy people would rather listen to a generator with a busted muffler than have to actually talk to your camping neighbor (good grief!), but for the rest of us it's just fun. I'm also very aware that I could stand to lose 20 lbs, but camping for us is about relaxing and letting loose. To each his own, life is too short to complain about what someone else is doing when it has little to no affect on you. As a previous poster said, if you don't like this sort of thing I'm sure there is another CG nearby that will better suit your tastes.

By the way, none of this is directed to the OP. He did not seem to be intolerant of people using golf carts, he was making an observation. He even mentioned that some of them were quite interesting to him. Well to the OP, if you ever see a lifted grey metallic golf cart cruising by your campsite, stop me and say hello. I'll take you for a ride and even let you drive. :B

When Dennis says they were like flies everywhere and that he was over whelmed? When he describes the people riding them as people that should be walking instead of riding. I do not believe he cared for what he was seeing.

I hope I never run into something like that because I am afraid I would have to complain about the danger of getting hit by one of these carts.

But I could be wrong, maybe Dennis wants to join them.:B

We like taking ours to the campgrounds. Lots of fun running around in the evenings.

Folks cruising in their golf carts is a sign of life (joy de vivre)IMHO.

Very rare here in Florida...most stay in their units...only leave to walk the dog or go to the bathhouse.

Carts are very quiet, smiling folks that stop to chat.

I'll take them over those huddled inside any day.

Just saying....
