Got stuck in neutral

While driving our 2005 Monaco Diplomat on the fwy my husband decided to
downshift and the motorhome got stuck in neutral and would not come out while the buzzer was going off. He was on cruise control so don't know if that was the reason. Eventually it punched into gear. Would like to know what could possibly cause this so we don't do it again. Could it be because he was on cruise control or something more sinister?
We made it to our destination, but afraid this may happen again.

    I agree with the safe mode theory.
    I had my alternator fail and was trying to make it to the next town and the batteries drained down fairly quickly. The lights on the shift pad blinked a couple times and it went to neutral. So yes I think that is what they do.
    It would be better to take it off cruise before you downshift.

    One thing I do know about the Allison is that it won't let you damage it. He may have tried to downshift too far and it went into safe mode. I did that once on our '08 Dynasty, it seemed to go into a neutral position like you mention.
