RE: drive shaft zirks on a DP:
Counting the two U joints, there will be 5 zirks-- as most U joints on DP's have two (180 degrees from each other). You only have to grease one of the two, as they go into the same area in the center of the U joint. The other one is the one of the slip joint.
Bret,
As a follow up on the U joints, make sure you see grease come out from all four bearing cups. If not, switch to the other zerk and/or relieve the tension on the u-joint by rotating the drive shaft or by prying slightly on the joint. Sometimes pressure on the joint will keep the grease out.
Also, on the slip joint you may need to hold your finger over the small pressure relief hole to get grease all the way to the splines.
I read about another trick to keep the shaft/u-joints from slinging grease all over the undercarriage. When finished greasing the joint, wrap some saran wrap around the shaft/joint area to catch the grease when it first starts slinging. You can then remove the wrap. I have never tried that as I don't like the idea of saran wrap being slung around but I guess it would work. I think most of the time we probably use too much grease and just sling it around but I want to see the grease myself.
