Hail damage

Our motorhome was hit by hail a couple weeks ago. The adjuster is going to take a look at it and see if it's damaged. The hail was about 1 3/4" in diameter. We had just put new covers on the AC units and they look like swiss cheese now. I don't know how delicate these roofs are. Does this size of hail have the potential to do a lot of damage to the roof?
  • rjjr, sorry to hear about the damage to your coach. I can't imagine going thru something like that.
  • If large enough, Hail will crack and puncture Fiberglass roofs.
They will usually NOT puncture Rubber(EPDM) roofs, BUT the hail will put holes in the decking under the roof and will require new rubber and decking. Putting a tarp over the roof will not do anything in large hail storms. Doug
  • I have covered my CAR with a sleeping bag to protect it from the hail. I was wearing a pot on my head for protection!! Guess that makes me a pot head!!
  • For those who live in areas that get serious hall storms, can you cover the coach up with a tarp to protect it, or would that be fruitless? I guess its better for the hail to hit your MH rather then your head!
  • FWIW. From what I have read fiberglass roofs are more susceptible to hail damage then rubber or TPO. Good luck.

  • I must admit that I have only seen real hailstorms on the news. What we get in California is absolutely nothing compared to a serious storm elsewhere in this fine country of ours!
  • Happened to a friend of mine a few years ago....he has a 2009 Winnebago View...lots of damage and had the roof skin replaced along with the side view mirrors, AC Cover, and windshield wiper arms...oh and the skylight as well. Crazy that the (2) solar panels he had mounted on the roof were not damaged....
  • Maximum wind speed was just under 60 mph. The storm lasted about 30 min. and it looked like snow on the ground when it was done.
  • Yes, size matters, however ( for crop insurance ) small hail with high winds will do more damage to the plants than large sized hail with little wind. We were camping a few weeks ago ourselves when hail came through that lasted for about 30 minutes, smallish in size but still coming down heavy. I couldn't get outside fast enough when the storm passed to inspect. Thankfully there was no damage.
