Really depends on your plans from there. If by land, absolutely you are back tracking.
If also considering visiting Skagway, you can take a ferry over to Haines (next stop on the Alaska Marine HWY).
Not sure Haines is worth a round trip by land-- if getting onto the ferry, either Haines or Skagway work.
