We took the Alaskan Highway up through Whitehorse. Then on the return trip down to Haines. First stop Kathleen Lake NP. Enjoyed Haines and camped next to the water at Oceanside RV Park. We also took the Fjord Express day trip to Juneau. Then on to Skagway via ferry. Heading north we took Tagish road to the Alaskan Highway bypassing WH. All roads were good.
We found interesting things to do in Skagway while avoiding the cruise ship rift raft. Skagway like Juneau has a significant Caribbean jewelry store influence. Same stores, same products, same people, etc.
We were going to take the train but got some rain - and the road out largely parallels the train to the summit.
The Fjord Express passenger ferry is expensive but it's a customized route that depends upon what's available to see. The owner even went 20 miles out of the way to see whales with no guarantee they would be there - they were. And the ferry to Skagway was expensive - MH, car and 2 passengers. But the drive from Haines to Skagway is long but a little less cost for fuel. And Haines/Skagway have the lower US fuel prices.
Driving to Alaska your scenic views of the incredible SE Alaska scenery are largely hidden. Haines/Skagway offer another glimpse.
