I have checked the frig temp without the fan then turned the fan on & watched the temp drop by as much as 6 degrees within 5-10 minutes.
All this means is you got cold air directed onto the thermometer lead.
Putting fans inside a closed system cannot change the air temperature inside the closed system. In fact, the heat generated by the fan motors will increase the temperature some small amount.
Without fans, there will be natural convective currents inside the enclosure as cold air sinks to the bottom and warmer air rises to the top.
All the fan will do is mix the air so that the temperature is more evenly distributed within the enclosure.
If you want to do this simply get stand-alone thermometers and set them on different shelves of your refrigerator. Let them sit overnight and then open the fridge and see what the different thermometers read.
Then repeat the process with all the thermometers in the same place.
Fins in food section provided the cooling effect.
Natural circulation does occur (cold settles/hot rises) but is lacking in food section due to size/items in compartment.
Fan helps distribute the cool air thru-out compartment for better overall cooling effect AND helps keep fins from icing up will cause warmer temps due to false readings.
