Hauling a 4-door Jeep behind a Sunseeker or Similar?

Hello,

We are looking to purchase our first motorhome and have narrowed down our wants list to a Used Class C around 32' feet with the double bunks in the mid-section. We want to haul a 4 door jeep for our family of 5 behind the rig. I've been specifically looking at the Forest River Sunseekers because they along with the Thor Chateau seem to have a higher hauling capacity then the other brands built on the Ford 450. Does anyone have any real life, been then, done that tips on hauling a jeep behind their Class C? Am I right in looking toward only those two makes/models?

  • "downer" might have a good point, crunch your numbers, your real numbers.
Plus, if the math works in your favor, which model 4 door Jeep ? You can tow all 4 down with the Active Drive II 4x4 .

Behind my 24' non slide Sunseeker I was thinking about towing my 2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude but its an AWD jeep not an Active Drive II. I would have to use a dolly . Instead of doing that I decided to tow our shopping cart....Chevy Sonic hatchback 4-down

*After reading the above post, it seems like you might be ok. check all weights to be sure.
  • Quite a "Downer" .. my manual for my 2017 e450 shows gcwr of 22,000lbs. So, if my chateau is full to the brim with 14,500 lbs that leaves only . . Hmm..7.500lbs left for my 4800 lbs 4 door jeep? OP will be fine. Towed my jeep with a dirt bike off back thousands of miles thru the Western mountains and camped at dozens of isolated, secluded scenic spots with my 23U chateau. Wouldn't have got into many of these with my ol' f750 based 40 ft super C.(pic in profile)
  • Sorry to be a "downer" here but there is no way a Class C coach over 30' with a slide or two and five people and all the gear that goes along is not over its GVW before it goes out the driveway! Towing a four door Wrangler that will weigh over 4400 lbs will surely surpass the GCVW of the E-450. Safety must come first for you, your family and the rest of us on the road. Pulling a 4 door Wrangler behind a Sprinter is equally dangerous. After having two E-450's and having concern about being over loaded I have moved up to a Super C and now have zero worries. There are to many overweight Class C's on the road!

I haven't looked at any class C RVs since I got my Sunseeker in 2012. It's much shorter than what you want at 23' and no slides but is built on the Ford E450 chassis, and I tow a rather heavily modified Wrangler JKU with it.

I chose the Sunseeker almost exclusively for it's holding tank size, though I thought I liked the floorplan too. The freshwater tank in the rig is 55 gallons and since we boondock almost exclusively, the extra size tank is important to me and probably will be for you too with a family of 5.

As with almost all RVs, be ABSOLUTELY certain that the loaded with stuff for camping weight is well below what you "expect" you'll need. People almost always seem to underestimate how much stuff they'll take with them and can easily be overloaded.

I won't recommend one brand over another. Does it suit your needs? BUY IT!

  • It looks to me like the 32’ Sunseeker has sufficient towing capacity if the numbers from their website are accurate. 22k combined versus 14.5k GVWR. I didn’t see what the unloaded weights were but I suspect you will find with five people (albeit 3 are small) with full fuel, full water, everything you need to take with you, you quickly get to the GVWR. If you can find one for sale ask to see the sticker that shows the weights, tire information. It should have the information you need.

By "hauling" I assume you mean towing, not carrying? Basically, you'll need 5000 lbs towing capacity. If you tow four down, tongue weight is not a factor. But a potential seperate issue does pertain to hauling- can an E450-based 32 foot C carry the weight of your family and everything you want to take with you? Some can, some can't.

Correct. We are looking to "pull"/tow a 4 dr jeep behind a class C. The big issues is we own neither atm and I don't want to buy anything, load it up and then find out we can't safely go down the road. Our 3 sons are currently ages 5, 7 and almost 10 and weight 32lbs, 38lbs and about 55/60lbs. Combined my husband and I weight less than 300lbs. I plan to "pack light" but we are planning to go on long trips and may eventually go full time.

  • I pull a 2016 JKU behind our Navion.
Towing (4 down or flat) is just a bunch of math based on actual vehicle weights, GVWR, GCWR, and manufacturer's ratings and specs. Get the actual vehicles weighed loaded for travel. Then plug the numbers in to the formula and see if you're good to go.
GCWR - (loaded tow vehicle weight + loaded towed weight) = good to go, or overweight. The towed weight must be less than the tow vehicle's maximum hitch weight rating. Plug in the numbers and if the result isn't a negative number you're good to go.
So, any tow vehicle or motorhomem that has sufficient hitch weight capacity for your towed, and enough room under the GCWR of your chosen combo will do the job.
