Headers vs oem manifolds

So we are new to this forum and to the motorhome world also. I'm having to replace the heads on our ford 460 and seriously considering a banks exhaust instead of the oem manifold which I suspect trashed the head. any comments?

  • Hi,

I also put the Banks system on my nearly new F-53 with a 460" engine, and am very happy with it some 15 years later. The Banks will hold up long term.

The factory cast iron is cheap, they do not spend more than about $200 for the entire system on the factory set up with cast iron manifolds and plain steel exhaust that is dipped in galvinizing, and it is only going to last a few years, or at best 100,000 miles.

    Fred,
  • I have just gone this route..new manifolds and a complete dual exhaust....I did an exhaustive search for headers for F53/460 including calling factories.....the only ones available were banks.....So, if any one finds ANY OTHERS IN STOCK AVAILABLE ANYWHERE PLEASE POST IT HERE....I can afford banks ,just rebel at the cost.....
  • WeBcruisin,

I had a 460 and did the Banks PowerPack System w/Transcommand and it was great! huge increase in power and torque, plus engine ran MUCH cooler.

    $3400 well spent, IMHO

    Happy Trails! :W

  • Had my exhaust manifolds replaced under warranty several years ago.

Decided then if I ever had header problems again I would go with aftermarket headers like Banks, Thorley ,Gibson, etc based on what was available and what the shop I work with recommends.

So far I haven't had any more problems........
  • From folks I've met on our travels with the 460 engine and have installed headers, they claim it really wakes up the 460 and lets it runs cooler.

Headers certainly wouldn't hurt, but before installing the Banks system which is a great system you might save some $$$ using Doug Thorley, Gibson or other headers.

If you do install headers I would highly recommend running a 3.5" exhaust and tail pipe along with a performance muffler like Dynamax, Magnaflow or Flowmaster.

Best of luck and let us know the final result..
