Heater vs. A/C

I am currently the "carer" for a 2006 Fleetwood while its owner is in the hospital. It has a 2-zone heat system. During the day, I turn the heat off; at night, I turn the heat on BUT the A/C comes on too. This is not good, I don't think. The thermostat (located above the dash on the passenger side) is set for 66 in both zones. Tonight, when I got there, it showed the temps as 58 in both zones. Turned the heat on and the A/C came on also. What am I doing wrong?

  • My thermostat has a "mode" button and I can cycle through fan only, cool, heat pump, furnace. I have to set this for each zone. What are you doing to turn heat on/off?

I set the mode to Heat/Electric. I don't have a choice except between gas & electric. The slider switch has "Cool" "Off" "Heat".

When you say the A/C "comes on too," are you saying the roof units start up AND you can hear the gas furnaces ignite?

Yes. And feel cold air out of the A/C vents and heat from the heater vents.
  • Electric heat on that thermosat is most likely heat pump on A/C. That is OK above freezing. Below freezing use propane to heat basement, wet bay and water lines.

  • The heat comes on at the same time as the A/C. Where would I see if the A/Cs are reverse cycle heat pumps?

Are the ACs reverse cycle heat pumps? Let them run a little while and see if you get hot air. Also, try setting the temp only a few degrees above the inside temp and then bump the temp up keeping within four degrees of the inside temp.
