HELP - electric stip

We have a 2003 Holiday Rambler Atlantis and the electric step is not working. We have looked inside and outside and can't find the fuse. The manual shows the fuse diagram but not where its located only says it is in an outside compartment but damn if we can find.

  • On mine, you can leave the door open, keep your feet back, (if standing outside), and touch the brown magnetic switch near the door frame with a magnet or magnetic screwdriver in several locations to see if you can get trigger a step movement. We have had some mysterious changes that seem to be because the magnet mounted on the screen door is a little too far away when it comes closed sometimes.

There is also a separate circuit that is designed to pull in the steps when the ignition is turned on. It is activated by a separate wire, so if the steps are out, that's a good one to check and see if the motor is working, too. BTW, on mine the magnetic switch is the equivalent of a doorbell button, just a momentary touch of the two wires on that switch would trigger a change of position on the steps.
  • Chassis battery needs to be charged. Most steps run off of it.
  • They went out this morning when I opened the door and went back in when door shut but later in the day the stopped going out when the door was opened
  • What is not working....?

Sometimes they don't come out, sometimes they don't go in. They have an overload relay that will trip out before they do damage usually.

What you have to do it unplug the motor and put your meter onto the terminals. If you see the motor leads get a voltage spike, that means they are trying to work, and the overload is shutting them off. If there is no voltage at all, the power feed is missing.

Lots of different solutions depending on the real problem.
  • Can't help you with the fuse location - but the most common problem with electric steps are low battery and corroded ground connectors. Check those first - I suppose you can find the fuse if you follow the wires from the step controller under the rig.
