I wonder if the air units are short cycling. If the thermostat tells the compressor to shut off, and then turn back on too soon, it could trip an overload in the air unit. The compressor should stay off for a few minutes to allow the internal Freon pressure to drop. The outside temperature, and driving, can make a difference in cycle time. If they are cycling too fast, you should be able to increase the differential of the thermostat.
Should I be turning them to "on" instead of "auto" in order to avoid that?
