Help-Newb looking for a shop or DIY resources

Hello-

I am looking for some direction. I am looking to convert either a 16-30ft shuttle bus or older Airstream trailer into a business.

It wouldn't require everything in an RV. However I do need hot water, a generator or solar panels with a battery bank, a small refrigerator, plumbing in the floors, a bathroom (toilet and sink only) and an entertainment system.

So my questions are how much on average would a shop charge to gut and install the above along with some lighting and bench seating? I know that's such a general question to ask but I honestl yhave no idea. I am thinking 10-30k range???

Also, what are the best books to read? Are there inspections that must be passed for the plumbing and electrical in MD? I am very handy and have plenty of tools for home remodeling.

  • r1racer from your description it looks like you need an rv minus the shower. An old Airstream is already an rv so find one and refurbish. Polish it up and enjoy.
  • If you are not going to be moving it often I would definitely look for a used larger travel trailer. Those big trailers are often DIRT CHEAP and all they really need is a resealing of the top, a good cleaning on the outside and maybe new tires if you are going to move it a lot. At the campground I was at someone was selling a 40' 5th wheel trailer for $2600, they said everything worked, it even had a washer and dryer in it.

Look more closely at regulations because if it is on wheels there might be a whole lot less inspections for a MH which has already passed numerous inspections. Of course, you are going to want to have somebody go over any prospective purchase carefully so you dont get stuck with repairs.

Using travel trailers (TT) for business is getting very big right now, as is using them as a guest facilities, as offices, music rooms, etc. in people's back yards! Just do a google for ... business travel trailers
  • I might start with a new(er) cargo trailer. Easy to modify.

  • Hello, welcome to the forum.
I don't have an answer on the price for your project.

Have you considered buying a used Class C or A and modifying it to your needs?

All the systems will be in place. It may be easier/cheaper than starting from scratch.
