You guys have already talked me out of any thought of going without a toad. I'll go with a toad for sure! The 40' sounds good. I thought most 40's have a tag axle? Tag axle a bad idea or just that it costs more to buy?
Mondooker, we started with a 42 ft. with a tag as our first coach. We rented three times before we ordered our coach (31 ft. class C w/one slide, a 38 ft. DP with 3 slides and then a 38 ft. DP with 4 slides).
The 42 ft. with tag was really nice. Had a huge amt. of CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity). The tag helps the coach drive straighter and it's smoother when you are going over speed bumps and probably other irregularities in the road.
The plus with a tag is that if you get a bad alignment, which we did get once from Colton Truck in Colton, CA. 2,000 miles later while in Nashiville, I noticed severe tire wear. We were able to get a decent alignment at TAFA (Tire, Axle, Frame and Alignment) in Nashville and we rotated the worn tires to the tag and had an almost new fresh set from the tag axle.
We upgraded to a 45 ft. I thought that 3 ft. is not that big of a deal. WOW, it does make a difference. Mainly when turning and fitting into smaller spots.... our coach is large and tall. I have to keep all that in mind when getting into tight spots, narrow roads and low trees.
Also, I would never go without a toad as you have surmised from others. Since the new coach has a bath and a half, we have the same interior space as a 42 ft., just an extra toilet.
Safe travels,
MM.
