Motorhome towing length laws

So can one use a motorhome to pull a toad and a jetski trailer as long as it's less than 65'?

Washington State is 78' but you can get over length permits at any State DOT Office for a fee and you have to have a placard, flashing yellow light and not travel during the morning are afternoon rush hours. There are certain construction zones that you can't go thru also but there posted with a detour! You can also be in combination with a RV (3 vehicles) with a placard and the correct breaking system. It is against the law to be over-length on the road.

I worked in highway construction for several years and I never saw this type of action ever. IMHO this is an old wives tail as it relates to giving over weight tickets without weighing. They get paid by the ton mile and every load has a ticket stating its tare weight and the Gross weight. If a trucker can make their tare weight lighter such as no spare tire or empty fuel tanks they can make more $$$ Of course you can stop that by making them get a tare weight before loading every time. Just takes two trips over the scales. We would check tickets to make sure that they were not over weight.

Yes we were stopped to stay overnight just off of interstate 10 before heading south to Glamis. All rigs were registered in CA and used CA roads to get to the parking lot so it stands to reason that they had just violated a traffic law and if they left the parking lot they were once again going to violate a traffic law. JMO but I don't think the officer would have noticed the extra length of the motorhomes going down the road but since his attention was drawn to our doubles and we were parked next to the MH's it was easy for him to see they might, and were, over length.

Its just like the DOT inspection and scale guys who work highway construction jobs and write every one of the construction dump contractors tickets for overweight without ever weighting them. Easier to give them out in the parking lot and they are sure to be overweight sometime during the week, and no manhandling of the portable scales!! Happens every day!!!

On the trip home both MH's hooked to there trailers and headed home and have since travelled thousands of miles with no issues. I think it is best to be within the limits of the state you are registered but as far as getting ticketed I feel it is just the mood of the officer or drawing attention to your setup that will get you in trouble.

Here in NC towing length is 90ft---that's right 90 ft. North Carolina Motorsports Assoc has clout and went to the General Assembly and got it changed...I am a racer and tow a 32ft trailer behind a 38ft DP. I have been all over the East and never been stopped. But mentioning Cal, several racers were detained at the State line last year for exactly that---over length.....I don't remember the details other than it happened. As many have said they don't usually bother motor homes and I never stop at the scales, never.
