No one can really suggest to you what size motorhome would be good for YOU. Folks travel in all different sizes. Even full-timers can live and travel year-round in very small RVs. We've met plenty of them. You certainly don't need a 40' or over to be comfortable.
What do you have now or is this your first RV?
How much traveling will you do? Weekends and 1-2 week vacations? Months at a time?
Are you ones that will sit inside a lot or will you be active outdoors?
If this is your first RV I wouldn't recommend jumping into a 40' at first. That's overkill. Yes, you'll enter one and ooh and aah at all the space but will you really need it? For short trips will you fill it up?
The best thing to do is visit as many RVs as you can in all sizes. Start with a 40'+ and work yourself down in size. Ask the salesperson to leave you alone because you want to 'live' in it for a half-hour or so. Then test out sitting in the various places, working in the kitchen, using the bedroom and especially test out the bathroom to see if there's enough room to sit and take a shower. You may be surprised at how small you can go and for the first one, you'll feel more confident driving and parking it.
Towing a car? Definitely - especially if you're true explorers in new surroundings.
Have fun choosing what's good for YOU.
