I ran numbers on rentals, and we're looking at $4/k per year minimum to cover our usual trips, and something like our three-week Yellowstone jaunt gets ugly in a hurry. There's a lot of wisdom in your suggestion, but hubs says he'd rather buy.
I should probably add that I'm a writer. I go to workshops and conventions a few times a year on top of camping, so we think an RV would be a better option for the neurotic, has-to-be-with-mommy cat than stuffing him in a carrier and dragging him onto airplanes.
(Yep, a writer with a neurotic cat. Apparently I'm a walking stereotype. :) )
