Some good feed back already. This is a great forum and your doing the right thing starting here with questions. If you have not already done so visit the brand specific forums.
Teens: I do not think you want to have your sons bed also be the table where you plan to have breakfast. My daughter when she was a teen (and still) is not an early riser unless there are other motivators (going camping, trip to grandmoms, crew in HS or early classes or labs in college). My morning coffee was never a motivator for her to wake up early.
Usage: Our trips per year went way up. We also use the RV for things unexpected. We used to move and store my daughter's stuff for 2 months when going from college to grad school. We used if for a family trip to RenFair (made a great place to cool off). When a storm wiped out power for three weeks we lived in it and it became a neighborhood phone charging station and cooling station. We can take the dogs with us when we travel.
Driving and MPG: My wife has no issues driving the Lazy Daze. Once she got the hang of watching the back end and the height she has no issue driving it. I'm finding that we get mostly 9.5mpg in VA. If I am going to the mountains a little less. When driving to or from FL and going on level interstate at 55mph with no traffic for a 200 mile stretch (about as long as I can drive with out getting up to walk around) I have hit 11mpg. I have gotten as low as 8, but that was a lot of town driving in stop and go traffic. I've done these numbers several times using either combined tanks of gas and milage for a trip or individual legs.
Buying an older Lazy Daze. Be careful. Lazy Daze are very nice rigs (that why I got one). If you are looking at one more than 5 years old you want it looked at by someone that is in that business. The house frame is wood covered by aluminum. It holds up very well when properly cared for. When it is not cared for wood rot is very expensive to replace. I noticed your from the west coast. There are several people on the LD forum that can point you to someone qualified to check out the LD. That said there are several older LD that seem well cared for on the forum.
I hope you find one soon.
