High oil pressure

My 94 Winnebago 454 runs some pretty high oil pressures. Up to the top limit of the gauge. It seems to move around at the top of the range and then it'll suddenly drop back a little and then start moving back up towards the top. I don't have any leaks, less than 50K on the engine and it doesn't burn or smoke a bit. Tail pipe is clean enough to eat out of. What would cause my engine to run that much oil pressure? What limits or controls the oil pressure? Should I be concerned?

  • Those old gauges often don't register correctly. A local mechanic can install a temporary mechanical gauge so you can see if your electric gauge is correct.
  • The sender is easy to replace and may very well be the problem.
  • Did the high pressure start after changing the oil filter?

  • I'll try replacing the sending unit and then move to the gauge.

It's had high pressure both before and after any oil changes.

  • Check your connections first. Higher resistance will read higher oil pressure, it could be a bad connection.
