We try to pack all of the shelves full, with bread or food in soft plastic tubs at the front of each shelf that helps to keep items from shifting during travel. We also place heavier items in glass at the rear of each shelf or in door shelves/bins.
We don't seem to need adjustable rods. I have also seen elastic cords with suction cups that serve the same purpose as the rods that might work.
