It may depend on which series it is, but at least the series II version is not a true RMS meter, but average responding. From the manual: "AC conversions are AC-coupled, average responding, and calibrated to the RMS value of a sine wave input."
Note that any style of multimeter will give accurate results with a sine wave; it's when the waveform deviates from a sinusoid that the readings become incorrect (or at least are not RMS readings) for your multimeter--and, for that matter, for my Fluke 73 series II, which is generally similar but a lower-end model and gray rather than yellow. They are excellent meters.
