X2 There also can be a ego factor. When I was young, I ran my uncles rental department at his marina. When I wanted to go over the controls, I was almost always told that they were "knew how to run a boat."
They started the motor and ran into the dock! At that point they were willing to accept a few suggestions. I understand that I was only 16, but heck , I already had 8 years of power boating experience at that time.
Whenever someone offers advice, a smart person listens as there is always something to learn.
