I know a few people who have gotten out. The one that struck me the most was a guy working at the place where I have my coach work done. He said it's gotten too popular and basically the rich people have ruined everything.
He remembered years when he went to Florida and didn't need to make reservations and rarely paid more than $20 for a night at the campground. Campgrounds have had to upgrade for the 45 foot/50 amp monsters that are popular with newbies and that costs them money. The only solution was to raise rates.
There used to be an esprit du corps amongst campers that really doesn't exist today. No one in a motor home waves at me, or if they do, their windows are so dark I can't see them. I was parked next to a fellow from OK in a 40 something Aspire for 2 days and the only time I saw him was when he exited the coach and got in the toad. There are a lot of reasons for this, but I blame the insurance companies that penalize campgrounds that allow campfires.
Then there's the corporatization of campgrounds. I don't mind KOAs, but they are more pricey that most private campgrounds and there's no reason other than corporate overhead. Just compare the rates of a private CG that has gone KOA.
So the short version of that long answer. This is suppose to be recreation. If you find yourself asking "Why am I doing this?", get out.
When it becomes too much work, too much hassle, or takes more of your disposable income than another form of recreation, you get out. If the latter, stay away from boats. Been there, done that, bought a motor home instead.
