Busskipper, last summer we left at 7PM and stopped at a Cracker Barrel north of Nashville. Woke up at 6AM and hit the road before they open saving $20 on breakfast. North of K city a friend called asking if I knew I-29 was closed at Sioux City...NO! We had planned on taking US 2 across to Glacier because we had never been in that part of the mid west. Decided to go to the Tetons instead as they were routing traffic to the east around the flooding. The next afternoon we were in the Tetons... a lot more than 1500 miles. Going west I buy fuel every 400 miles as the price increases as you go west and it lets me stretch my legs . Going east I will go 800 miles on a tank and yes I love Gas Buddy as it's easy to save 12-15 cents using it over going to FlyJ.
I realize this is not for most, especially as we get older so there is not one size fits all. Even though we are semi retired, it's still the destination for us. If I get sleepy I'll pull over and let the DW drive for a couple hours while I take a nap. She has decided there are only two good ways to see Kansas... at night or from 30,000'. Safe travels to all.
