I had a 86 allegro 32' /454 carb that was a beast....it pulled wolf creek and raton pass in 3rd gear..../30 MPH tho....no toad. 400 trans...4:86 rear.....but if you shifted to 2nd for more revs you were lost.....unbelievable torque at low speed.....
Now....I would not feel good about pulling a 3500 lb truck up steep grades.....I'd disconnect and have DW drive it....
But try it and see what happens...maybe yours will feel good doing it.
The first thing I did after I bought it was put a new performance timing gear set in it so my timing could be straight up instead of retarded on the keyways.New performance 750 Edlebrock AFB carb , dual exhaust , removed all the AIR system......really was a power house....had about 34000 mi.
