How to check antifreeze?

The E350 is the only vehicle I've owned with no radiator cap.
I am in the habit of checking the coolant level as summer approaches. I couldn't see the level on the Ford, so I put a Liter in the plastic overflow container. I don't understand how this could make its way into the radiator, though.

At this time of year, I want to check the density of the coolant to make sure it won't freeze in the -40 temperatures we get once or twice each winter. Is there any way to do that short of draining some out?

Is there a shuttle cock at the bottom of the radiator? You only need a cup full and can pour it back into the over - flow jug when you're done. Good Luck in your search.

Shuttle cock? I sure hope not, unless we're playing badminton! Ha ha just kidding, good point.
