No, it is not a common practice in my experience. When I was looking for a diesel pusher, I was told to drive as many of them as I could. I never was refused a test drive in a coach. I would go somewhere else. Test driving them is the best way to determine if you will like driving one.
I did not have a fifth wheel RV, but I did drive a 3 horse fifth wheel horse trailer with living quarters in front for many years before I purchased the diesel pusher. I did not have a hard time with the driving. The biggest change is backing up. I still find backing up harder because I do not feel as confident as I did with the fifth wheel. However, I enjoy traveling in the coach much better. I find it more comfortable and my passenger likes the ability to get up and walk around while I am driving.
