How to tell if an rv was wrecked

Hello, first off we have taken 2 short trips in our class b+ and everything works well except we need a new house battery and our sensors for gray and black water are inaccurate. However we have discovered something disturbing. When my husband was washing the rv and it was in the sun you can tell that there is a 7-8 inching area on the back bumper that is linear and looks like a repair. Also he said that the tail lights on that side are different from the other taillights and it also looks like the exhaust pipe has been replaced. We now suspect the rv has been in a wreck. Looks like it was minor involving that corner of the rear bumper but we would really like to know how much work was done. Before we bought it I had tried to do some research on how to obtain a carfax on an rv but came up empty handed. Any way to get something like a carfax report on an rv?
Thanks zigpep

  • Keep in mind that CarFax only hears about a minor percentage of the collisions. Most are never reported because owners don't like it and there's no money in it.

Ok, just spent 40 bucks for peace of mind. No wrecks per carfax so whatever happened was minor. Would have been nice for theperson we purchased it from to let us know.
Thanks for the replies. Also just wanted everyone on this forum to know that husband and I wished we have done this years ago. We Really like having the rv and we are so lucky we both work 12 hour shifts and have time to take it out every other week. We live in a great area for short rv trips. Tons of stuff to do. I have also been a little surprised that it has not been harder. By that I mean so far everything works and no leaks and we have not broken anything! I have my fingers crossed as I type that last part.
    Thanks zigpep
When carfax doesn't show anything the repair was done without an insurance claim. It doesn't necessarily mean it was minor, there are several reasons repairs don't show in carfax. The best source for information is the previous owner, if it's important to you why not ask????

Thanks for the replies. Will try carfax now. Almost don't want to know since nothing I can do about it now.

It is good to know so you have a good idea how bad it was, what to look for too.

  • Or if it was a self-made wound and the deductible covered the cost of the repair. Then there would be no need to file a claim that would be noted on a Carfax or any other report.

About the VIN number, our rig has two VIN numbers, one for the chassis and one for the conversion. Be sure to use the VIN for the chassis (the number in the windshield) for the other one is not used.

From Zigpep's description, it sounds like a minor altercation with a pole or peg of some sort. Maybe the cement base to a street light for they are often a surprise when backing up.

If the repair was done well, I would not lose any sleep over it. I would just inspect the seam work & caulk work in the area a couple times a year for a few years to make sure all stays well sealed. Also look up from below to make sure the floor is well sealed to the walls. After a few years, inspect as often as the rest of the house needs.
  • Just put the Vin number in CarFax in it should bring back the info.

Only if they had their insurance pay for the repair. Sometimes people don't if they can afford to do it themselves because any insurance claim is commonly believed to lower the market value by 20%.

And CarFax is only good if all the data has been entered into their system.

If you can easily tell where it was repaired and parts are different, sounds like it could have been a self repair and the data won't show in CarFax.
