Hurricane Matthew

Just got email from my neighbor in Daytona. They lost their pool cage and some of their roof. They said our house looks ok.

Not a wise decision.....I just hope that he at least will tie some identification on his body so authorities will be able to tell who that body belonged to after the storm passes.....

As an Emergency Manager for the past 23 years, I've seen many stoopid things that people do, thinking that it won't be as bad a predicted. Unfortunately, most of the time they are proven right, as we tend to err on the side of caution when we issue evacuation orders and other advisories to protect the public. BUT....just know this....if people decide to stay put during a mandatory evacuation order under a legally declared state of emergency.....there is no obligation on the part of emergency responders to try to help them during that order. So many folks never consider anyone else but themselves, but when they get in trouble, they call responders and expect us to put our lives on the line because of their bad judgement and their arrogance in times of disaster.

If he rides it out there inside an RV there won't be a need for a rescue. It will just be a recovery.

The news did just report that wind gusts have already been measured at Cape Canaveral at 100 MPH, not counting any damage from storm surge. I wish the gentleman well but it appears he made a foolish decision.

Right now, in the Tampa Bay area, with the storm due East of us off of Melbourne, the winds are light, less than 30MPH, and the rain is minimal. I think we received less than 1/2" last night.
If you come in to the State NOW I would come across I-10 and pick up US19 east of Tallahassee, to come south. This is a divided highway, well paved, that we use whenever we are leaving Florida to head West.
I would come down to the Tampa Bay area, which is due West from Melbourne, and then, depending on conditions in Melbourne, you can then take I-4, US60, US192 over to Melbourne when conditions allow it. If the conditions at Melbourne do not allow you to go over there yet, I am sure that you can find an RV park in the Tampa area to stay until things open up.

After the storm has passed completely, and if the Melbourne area is open to incoming traffic, I would take I-75 south and pick up the Fla Turnpike at Wildwood and take it south to 192, which is the shortest and quickest path to Melbourne.

Sometimes, that's not possible. Some of us must go. Please wish us the best.

For those planning to head to the Florida east coast once the storm passes.

The power grid will be down for several weeks. There will probably be damage to bridges and roads.

Unless you are going for rebuilding purposes you're better staying away.

I guess someone should go ahead and contact his next of kin. Sad.

This is a pretty big storm and the feeder bands of rain are already starting to drop some rain on us in the West Coast of Florida. Winds are just starting to pick up. Radar
