HWY 1 Leggett to Jenner.

Just got done driving HWY. 1 in Ca. Drove it in my MH. towing a 4 door Jeep. MH. is 35 feet.

Read on this site many times how this is a scary route and should not be done. White knuckle drive if I recall.

Well I am here to tell you if you are confident in your driving you will enjoy this route. I had no problems keeping my RV in my lane.
You will however have many 15 - 30 MPH curves but will be rewarded with beauty like no other. You will use your exhaust brake and your service brakes. I pulled over and let cars pass 6 times. Sometimes only 1 car.

The traffic is what I would call light for late July. We camped on a bluff 30 feet from the edge. Sunsets were great.

Try not to let someone discourage you from this drive. If you are a good driver you will surely enjoy the beauty of this route. By the way in no way did I hold up traffic in a negative way.

As long as you're under 40', you're legal and yes, it's a trip worth doing as long as you use some simple common sense.....Dennis

    P.S. It's even more enjoyable in a Vette...just sayin..:B..Dennis

Motorcycle is even better! :B Just sayin!
  • Yep, 40 foot restriction sign is very large as you turn off HWY 101 on to 1.

You will not get away with saying I did not see that sign as they will arrest you for driving blind.:D

Also to note, there are many turn outs on this route and places to pull over and enjoy the scenery.

I like the dry camping on the bluff. $33 a night at state wayside and $27 a night at private bluff in Ocean Cove.

California highway 1 is perhaps the most scenic highway in all of America. And like you said, it is doable with an RV.
  • We did Hwy 1 from south of Frisco to LA last fall. It was one of the nicest drives we've done with our MH. (We didn't have the boat with us).
