Hydraulic filters

Yesterday I changed the hydraulic filters on my Spartan Chassis (Newmar) it really was a no brainer, they were located with in the hydraulic tank by the engine. by removing the "V" band clamp holding the top of the reservoir exposes the wing nut holding the filters in place and can be removed. there are 3 filters stacked one on to of each other, with a wire hook you can retrieve them from the oil they set in. then drop three new ones in place, add oil to the full mark (site gauge) and replace the tank lid and V band clamp.

Freight Liner wanted $1800 to do this job.
I called Spartan's 1-800 number to have them tell me where the filter were hidden, the maintenance manual does not have that info.
  • Actually a LOT better to siphon out the oil from the reservoir before removing the filters.

If you don't, crud on the "dirty side" can get to/mix with the clean side of the filters.

Even if you reuse the old oil (depends on its condition as to whether it is a good idea), this keeps "clean side clean".

So what did it cost to DIY ?? Are the filters expensive and what intervals do they recommend changing ??
