You are right to call it a stretch. My HL gets 22-23 mpg untethered (about what a 5 cyl Sprinter B might get?) and 11-12 mpg towing (not as good as nearly any V8 class B by itself). Maybe that's what was meant about being "close" on operating costs?
I get 14 towing my small TT, I can always figure on 25.5 not towing, and frequently it hits 28 or so. the 29+ was a stretch where I filled up, and shortly entered a work zone at 55 mph for quite a few miles. I watched the gauge climb up and after I left the work zone it was at either 29.4 or 29.7 and I kept at 55 to see if I could break 30. It became obvious that I wasn't going to hit 30 so sped up a bit. My Highlander is rated to tow 5,000 lbs. which any sprinter isn't.

I'm not here to argue, Bumpy, but just as a point of info, the manufacturer of my Sprinter van is under the impression that towing capacity is 5,000 lbs and Tongue Weight - hitch, 500 lbs.
2006 Leisure BrochureBut for me, a plus of the van is not needing to tow. House+car all in one package.
