When I had Allstate Insurance, I used to call them at the end of a trip and say to suspend the collision coverage. You still would have fire coverage (if you have full coverage) and other things. Then call them before a trip, and get it set up to cover you. You also need it in effect the weekend before you need to smog it or renew the registration (if required in your state).
Many states now have computers to keep track of who does or does not have auto insurance. They get weekly updates.
