Inverter makes a loud hum when I start the generator

Hi Guys,
Sometimes when I start the generator in my Gulfstream, the inverter will make a loud hum for a few seconds followed by the AC voltage shutting down.

I have also noticed that the lights in the coach are excessively bright while the inverter is making this noise.

I tried opening the circuit breakers while this happening but the hum still doesn't stop and the AC still shuts down.

I can restore AC power by shutting down the generator and restarting again. It can take a few times before the generator will start and the inverter doesn't make the hum.

Any thoughts on what part of the system is at fault?
  • Contact Generac, get advice, may be an adjustment is needed. BTW, I maybe you ment "converter" not "inverter". Converters convert 110vac to 12vdc.Inverters convert 12vdc back to 110vac to run low wattage things like laptops, etc. from battery power when not hooked to 110vac camp power or running generator.
  • When this happens the AC voltage coming out of the generator is 150 volts AC.
    The generator is Generac NP-50G

    Ditto
  • The RV is a 1996 Conquest 102
The Inverter/Battery charger is a Magnetek Power Plus model #6345

The house battery is good and fully charged.
It is the house 12 volt lights that get very bright.

I have not checked the AC or DC voltages while this happens. It seems to be happening more lately so I may get a chance to do that.

Everything works fine when plugged in to shore power.

  • What inverter/charger unit do you have?
I assume it is a inverter/charger and not simply an inverter
The "lights" are they 12V lights that get brighter?
Have you checked your house battery?
If inverter/charger and a 12V problem my guess is the house battery
    But we need more info
