From what I had been reading the 12v wires need to be kept as short as possible to minimize voltage drop, the AC lines will not experience that so I was going to mount the inverter in the battery compartment.

I assumed you would use the same wire the 55 amp converter pushes power to the battery.
With alternator providing 14 volts I don't think voltage would be an issue on the road. Yes battery alone and down 30% on charge and voltage drops quickly under significant load.
