I think more of then die from lack of prevention than lack of use.
I have several small engines that are up to 20 years old and never have problems with age, but I am religious about running carburetors dry.
Just yesterday went to restart Generac, build into my conversion. Per my recollection last time I run it was at least 6 years ago as the sucker uses 1 gall/hr even without the load.
So I pour gasoline into plastic tank, push prime switch till I hear pump changing tune, pushed starter for 3 seconds and the thing started without hesitation.
Living in the past in 4-seasons I know that condensation can be real killer, that is why CA vehicles can last for 100 years without much maintenance.
