They're not illegal . . . But to open one to just avoid paying sales tax in your home state is illegal. That is what just about everyone I've had contact with in an RV park with Montana plates has done. Funny though you never see Montana plates on a 15k travel trailer. Just high end rigs. It is about time they cracked down on this.
Its also funny how you see the Montana plate on JUST the RV. The tow vehicle has the Iowa or whatever state they are from plate on it.

Not to steal the OP's post, but how is a Montana LLC different than someone from Iowa(or other State) different than registering in South Dakota? I have lots of friends that are registered in SD.
I am registered in South Dakota, licensed to drive there,vote there,get all my mail there. Did it because we are full time and need a domicile. Paid my taxes on every vehicle I bought. Didn't set up a LLC to avoid it. . . . That is the Difference
